a. Organization of congresses and meetings.

Aquatic warbler international congress

Since 18th august to 20th august 2005 in the Abilio Calderon Cultural Centre (Plaza Abilio Calderón, Palencia, España) will take place the Aquatic Warbler International Congress.

The objetive of the meeting is to exchange the latest knowledge about the conservation and biology of aquatic warbler in Europe with special importance of the new research in migratory routes and stop-over sites studied and the new discoveries of the african wintering range.

Meeting of experts in the management of the helofitic vegetation

From the 22nd to the 24th of August 2003, in Palencia, was held a meeting of experts in the management of the helofitic vegetation, directed to the conservation of the aquatic warbler:

Later, probably in 2005, a congress will be organized about the biology and situation of the populations of this specie.

b. Research works

Specific and suitable faunal monitoring

1. Specific and suitable faunal monitoring

It consists in weekly transects and fortnightly census, and takes into account the new conditions created in the basin of the wetland by the extension of its area and the change in its vegetal structure resulting of the methods of control. This performance will permit to know which parts of the wetland are used by the objective species, their densities, and more generally, to evaluate the efficiency of the performances of control of the vegetation in relation to the fauna we want to protect. The works are executed by experts of the Junta de Castilla y León and of the Fundación Global Nature

2. Scientific ringing

The ringing works are carried out during intensive campaigns in spring and summer, coinciding with the migrations of the birds. So the ringing station is active from the 5th of April to the 5th of May, and from the 15th of July to the 15th of October (inscription forms for voluntary work in PDF).

The intensive ringing campaigns are realized since the year 1999. All along those campaigns, 590 aquatic warblers have been captured, which proves the importance of the wetland for these species.

Radiotracking

3. Radiotracking

During their stay in the wetland, we will place a transmitter of very reduced size and weight to some aquatic warbler specimens. These transmitters will permit to locate the marked individuals in later occasions, during the time they spend in the wetland.

In this way, we will know with certainty the use of the different habitats by the species in the wetland, as well as the resulting implications upon the management of the wetland.
